Privacy policy

The Cake Wizard is run by Daft Planet Media LLC ("we", "us"). This page says what we collect, why, and who sees it. We have tried to keep it short and in plain words.
If you ask for a cake
- What we collect: what you tell us about the cake, the date, your ZIP code or postcode and country, pickup or delivery, your budget range, any photos you attach, your name, your email and, if you give it, your phone number. We also keep the messages you exchange with cake makers and the quotes they send.
- Who sees it: the cake makers your request is sent to (up to five who can reply) see your first name, your town or area, the date, your cake description, your photos and your budget range. Some other cake makers nearby may see a short preview only: the occasion, the date, your area, the size and your budget range. Your email, phone number and full name are shared with one cake maker only: the one whose quote you accept.
- Why: to get you quotes, to let you and cake makers talk, and to email you about your request (confirmation, new quotes, new messages, a cake maker becoming available).
If you are a cake maker
- What we collect: your email and password (the password is stored as a one-way hash), your business details, your service area, your photos, your availability, the quotes and messages you send and, if you add it, your phone number and license or registration number.
- What is public: your profile: business name, town, service area, what you make, prices from, photos, links and any license or registration number you choose to show. Your email and phone number are not shown on your profile. They are given to a customer who accepts your quote.
- Payments: Premium accounts are paid through Stripe. We never see or store your card number. We keep a record of the payment amount and date and your Stripe customer reference.
Visits to the site
We count page views and a few actions (for example, that a request was started or sent) to see what is working. This is our own simple counter: no advertising trackers, no tracking cookies and no selling of data. A random visitor number is kept in your browser's storage so we can tell visits apart; it is not linked to your name or email. We do not store your IP address with these counts. To protect the forms from abuse we briefly use your IP address in memory, and we store a scrambled one-way code made from it with each request.
Cookies
We use two cookies. One remembers which country you are browsing, so the site can show the right postcode wording and regions: it holds a two-letter country code and nothing else. We work the country out from your device's time zone, or you choose it yourself. The other is only for cake makers and the site administrator: it keeps you signed in. Customers do not need an account.
Who we share data with
- Cake makers and customers, as described above.
- Service providers who work for us: our email delivery provider (Resend) to send messages, our payment provider (Stripe) for Premium accounts, and our hosting provider (Google Cloud). They may only use the data to provide their service to us.
- The law: if we are legally required to, or to protect people from harm or fraud.
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
Cake requests, quotes and messages are kept while they are useful to you and to the cake maker, and for a reasonable time afterwards for records and disputes. Cake maker accounts are kept until you ask us to delete them. Ask us and we will delete your request or your account, apart from records we must keep by law (such as payment records).
Your choices and rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by writing to hello@thecakewizard.com. Depending on where you live (for example California, the United Kingdom or the European Union) you may have further rights under local law, including the right to complain to your data protection authority. We will not treat you differently for using your rights.
Children
The site is for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. Please do not include a child's full name or a photo of a child's face in a request.
Where data is kept
Our servers and service providers may be in the United States or other countries. If you use the site from elsewhere, your information will be processed there.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above. If the change is significant we will say so on the site.
